Ozzie Guillen has been the center of Chi-Towns critics for some time now. His most recent trip-up went down last weekend when he was quoted saying that Cubs fans are simply stupid, and Sox’s fans know that the Sox suck. To help clarify Ozzie’s position, let me break down the build up. So… as some of you may know, Milton Bradley was “publicly disciplined” by Cubs manager Lou Piniella during last Saturday’s game. When Ozzie was questioned about Lou’s decision to make the scene, he replied by stating that he did agree, however he felt as if the players of the club should police the dugout rather than the coaches and managers. This statement lit up a spark in ol’ Lou’s head as he declared that it takes a ball club like the Cubs to sell out U.S. Cellular Field (Chicago White Sox Home).
After Lou pointed out the dramatic increase of seats sold from 22,000 when the L.A. Dodgers faced the White Sox last week to the sell-out when the Cubies came to the Sox home; Guillen was again questioned for his notorious opinion on the matter. He replied by saying “Because our fans are not stupid like Cubs fans. They know we’re shit. Cubs fans will watch any game at Wrigley, because Wrigley is just a bar.” (YardBarker)
Now, I don’t know if Ozzie was saying this to light a fire under his player’s ass’ or to simply bash his rivals fan base. Whatever the case, it made headlines and I’m sure Ozzie is satisfied with that. With both ball-clubs struggling to stay at an even .500, I don’t think either manager is in the position to take blows at the other as both teams have a very little to be proud of. Yet, when push comes to shove, Ozzie really needs nothing to fuel his rants on the South-Side supremacy. Take a look at the video I found featuring both Lou and Ozzie having a Rap battle… Its a site to see.
He is the smartest manager in baseball in terms of reality. That comment is awesome. Almost as good as callin Jay Marioti a bundle of sticks
My opinion is that Ozzie doesn’t “slip up” he says exactly what is on his mind. He tells it like it is. When he says Cub fans are idiots he means that they support a losing organization no matter what kind of product the club puts out there. Sox fans will not attend the games if mgmt does not try to win. The Cubs are the only pro sports franchise I know that has marketed the whole “cute, cuddly losers” theme successfully. Personally, I would rather support a winning organization. Every team has down seasons but over 100 years..come on.
I am a White Sox fan as well, and what Jeff said is exactly correct. Guillen doesn’t pull many punches when he speaks, but at least he’s being honest. They should worry more about winning, then slip of tongues, goats, and guy’s interfering with the ball excuses. That’s already way old. They need to get a tougher mind set, and get rid of the easy way out stuff. That’s why I like what Pinella did with Bradley the other day. More of that will get that team rolling again. It’s a man’s game, so Cubbie’s just doesn’t market too good for my taste.
