UFC 100 - Brock is Here

UFC 100 - Brock is Here

UFC 100 brought absolutely everything that was expected.  From the great Dan Henderson to Georges St-Pierre to the main event featuring Brock Lesnar and Frank Mir, UFC 100 had an action packed card.  There were 11 bouts featured on Saturday night, but I’m going to start off with what I see as the first main fight being the battle between the US and UK – or Dan “Hendo” Henderson and Michael “The Count” Bisping.  This was a much-anticipated fight as Bisping had only lost one match prior to this fight; however, Henderson was able to win by knock out midway through the second round.

The next main fight was between Georges “Rush” St-Pierre and Thiago “Pit Bull” Alves.  These were definitely the two most athletic fighters of the night facing off to see who reigned supreme.  The Rush-Pit Bull fight was a battle that lasted the full 5 rounds with a unanimous decision in the favor of St-Pierre.  Rumor has it that St-Pierre’s next fight will be in the next weight class up from the 170, that being the highly talented middleweight division.  This fight lead into the main bout of the night that has been on every UFC fans mind for over a month.

Brock Lesnar and Frank Mir’s first meeting ended with Mir locking in a knee-bar resulting in a tap out.  Now with that being said, Mir’s face was pretty messed up for such a short fight.  All of these angles were being tossed around for this rematch, yet the outcome was a little different.  At the start of the fight, Lesnar was much more patient than the previous bout and about 2 minuets in, was able to take down Mir.  You can notice that Lesnar was definitely thinking throughout this match and was much less brawler-like.  When he was on top of Mir he didn’t let his fists go, but use tactical elbows and punches throughout the remainder of the round to cut Mir’s nose and gave his eye and forehead a few nice knots.  At the start of the second round Brock couldn’t have looked more focused as Mir was grinning back at him.  The first take-down of the round was again done so by Brock, though he did suffer a few consecutive knees to the head.  The grueling ground and pound began as Lesnar pinned Mir against the face and mat and the match was called.

Brock was able to comeback and defeat Mir in the biggest day in UFC history.  The crowd was definitely more supportive of Mir as the boo birds came out after the fight and Brock showed some real class by throwing up the finger to all the fans.  UFC President Dana White immediately spoke to Brock after that display and about 20 minuets later, Brock made an apologetic speech.  As for the future of Lesnar and his Undisputed Heavy Weight Championship, he will have at least one more opponent to face until he can knowingly say that he’s a champ.  That person is Fedor Emelianenko whom has never fought in the UFC due to contract traits, but will most likely agree for this title match to come!f

Thanks for the link. Not a big fan of Lesnar. I think his WWE antics are bad for the sport. Fedor will take care of him though, IF he can make to the UFC.

  2. Dave Power says:

UFC is marketed as a mixed martial arts, where fighters respect each other and it is a professionally run company. Lesnar shouting “thank you coors light” made a mockery of Dana Whites work. He even apologised for his behaviour. Fans love UFC because it is a skilful mixed martial arts, not the WWE.

With Brock’s antics after the fight, he certainly continued the controversy surrounding the image of the UFC in traditional sports media. Good or bad, it shines the light even brighter on UFC and Dana White, and less so on Brock himself. I think if he had finished that battle with the same sportsman’s grace as a Kevin Garnett or Peyton Manning, he would have done a lot more good for himself.

totally agree dave. i saw that apology too and it seemed more like mockery than sincerity.
